Away With Titles

Job titles are a peculiar thing. I’ve noticed many people strive for a “title” with their job and others using their company given title to pull rank. In a strict organization like… the military, there’s a need for a clear hierarchical structure. But, when you work for a creative company, it’s much less critical and can cause problems- I’ve seen it happen. So here’s my idea: let your employees pick their own title. Lay down some ground rules, like no swearing, no claiming you’re the CEO when you’re not, etc. And encourage them to say what they do, but with some of their own creative input. We’re creative people after all… wouldn’t you want your business card to say, “Designer of the entire universe and the planet Mars” or “Lvl 60 CSS Crafter”? Let the employees decide, and I bet they’ll also be handing their cards out more often- advertising your business for you.

Oooo I thought of another good one: XXXHTML Star
Elite Lvl 70 Microsoft Mage!
horns:
U gots the idea!
tup:
“Um, you know, that girl”
“Yes, THE Amy from the radio”
ha:
devlin sorta did that. you could put whatever you wanted on your business card. unfortunately, a lot of them sucked and were quite embarassing. because in the end, not everyone is creative in a ‘creative’ company.
That’s their OWN fault for sucking though. There could be a company competition for best card and worst card.
tup:
I requested “He-Man, Master of the Universe” once when I was asked what my business card should say. Initially, I received a blank stare. Eventually, I was deemed a “Software Engineer”. Not as exciting…
lame:
At the same company, I later met “She-Ra, Princess of Power”. We’re now happily married.
