Old School Candy!

The shiny yellow exterior gives only a hint of the chewy goodness that is wrapped beneath. Yes boys and girls, it’s Bonkers candy! These chewy morsels are a staple of any child’s diet. Or they were… until the manufacturer discontinued them. smiley

Why would they do such a horrible thing? I’m also pretty upset that Old Dutch no longer makes “Simulated Bacon” flavoured chips. Nothing tastes better than fake bacon powder on deep fried potatoes. I even emailed the company asking if they would bring them back. They replied, “No.” smiley

What candies do you love that you can’t get anymore?

I can’t think of the candies I used to have when I was young. Those I can remember I think are still around (Big League Chew, Lik-M-Aid). I suppose candy & chocolate cigarettes are probably no longer sold, and I remember buying those (even the gross chalk-like Popeye candy cigarettes). Kraft caramels I remember having, and while I haven’t seen them in forever they’re probably out there somewhere.

Hrm, here’s one, maybe… I forget what they were called but they were hard candies that would fizz in your mouth… they came in a string of individually-packed pieces, maybe 10 or 12 pieces to a string. I have no idea if they were a regional thing but if so, perhaps Rob knows what I’m talking about.

I remember wasting many an allowance on candy but can’t think of how that money was specifically…

And for what it’s worth, bonkers were good. I haven’t had the simulated bacon flavour Old Dutch chips in so long I can’t remember what they taste like. Besides, I was always a Salt & Vinegar fan when it came to potato chips… heck, I still am.

I remember those ones you are describing. They were called “Fizz” something or other. We had them too. They were good, but Pop Rocks were more violent.

I also liked Big League Chew but there was another gum just like it that was green. I can’t remember what it was called.

nd nickle gum. They had Rain-blo, and various other flavours that I can’t remember. What a great candy site I found!

I must be bored. Did a google search looking for the website detailing the changes in packaging/marketing of ‘big league chew’ <http://www.i-mockery.com/shorts/bigleaguechew/default.php> and found this one – <http://www.groovycandies.com> They claim to have some bonkers in stock but don’t have a ‘add to cart’ area for the item :(

You can get an assortment of candy from years gone by though.

Well, I remember some of the above mentioned.
I think the fizz items were called Pixy Stix.
Check out “The Candy Store” for a walk down memory lane.

Naw, the fizz things were hard candies in different flavours, but when you bit into them, it was like flavoured baking soda or something inside. At least if I’m thinking of the same thing Tall Chris is. Pixy sticks were like long sticks of powdered sugar. Mmmmmmmm…. sugar.

The Forks here in Winnipeg has the Candy shop in the Train (caboose?) they have a wide variety of candy, including some from 20 years ago or more (they recommend not to eat it, it’s for collecting only)

I thought it was neat they tried to get such a variety.

Allen: The ones I’m thinking of weren’t called Zotz… at least not here. I think Guin is close with “Fizz something” but I really can’t remember the name. As for the green gum, there was a Popeye gum that was green (for the spinach angle), maybe that’s what you had in mind.

Rob: Candy from years gone by might be scary. Cool from a nostalgia point of view but I’m not sure I’d want to eat candy that’s long since been discontinued and has sat in a warehouse for 2 decades. :)

Big Al: Pixie Stix were something completely different. They were essentially a straw filled with sugar, and are probably still on the market (perhaps even under the same name).

Guin: You’re remembering the same thing I am exactly…

The joys of getting old and having your memory fail, eh? :)

Brian! I totally have to hit that candy shop next weekend.

Yah, this Zotz Allen showed me online are the identical candy, but with different name and packaging. Same idea, but not the “Fizz Somethings”. Stupid memory…

OMG it totally was Popeye gum!!

    I feel complete now.

we have fizz in quebec. I just bought a pack last week :D I like fizz when they fizz :)

I miss the Popeye gum, the long green lime strings…

Yay Sarah! So they are called Fizz? That is awesome. Yeah Popeye gum, that was great. I liked Popeye “cigarettes” too. They are still around, but they are called “Popeye Candy Sticks” now. Same flavour, but they no longer have a red tip.

I too was a lover of those “Fizz somethings”…..however I do have a traumatic story attached to my memory of them, or at least at the age of ten or so, I felt it was traumatic….anyway, it goes like this, I was spending the night at a friend’s house and had been given precious dollars (or coins) to buy candy as a treat as my friend’s mom drove the school bus we were taking and we got to stop at the store on the way home, so I bought my fizzy candy, two long stings of them, only to forget them on the bus and was unable to retrieve them because I didn’t realize until too late I was missing them and they had already been snatched up by some other kid……I still remember the loss of those candies to this day…..guess I must of really liked them fizzy things!!!!

I liked “nigger babies” although I think the correct term now is ‘Black Liquorice Babies’
