What the World Needs… is Another Blog

Hey folks! Welcome to my new blog aboutnewmedia.com. I’m Guinevere (you can learn a bit about me here or here) and I’ll be your host blogger.

Yeah I have a blog already, but…
You may have noticed from the second link that I already have a blog. So why start another one? I’ve been running my blog at guinevere.ca for five years now and in that time I’ve blogged about anything and everything that interested, annoyed or delighted me. I never had one single focus for my blog until about three years ago when I moved to Toronto. At that time, I started using my blog as a way to keep in touch with family and friends back home. I talked less about my industry and when I did, it felt very out of place next to birthday party and trip photos. However, I found myself missing writing about the new media industry that I’ve worked in for over 10 years now. So I decided that I was going to start writing about it again, but that topics like this needed a home of their own.

So what’s this blog for?
Primarily, I intend to use this blog to discuss how new media is colliding with old media and how both are changing as a result. I work in a traditional media industry: broadcasting, but I am undoubtedly a new media professional. I have a degree in film & video, but I’ve worked as a web designer, developer, marketer and even linux system administrator. I also ran a design company (both web & print) for eight years with my husband so no doubt I’ll have some posts about new media entrepreneurship, strategy and some practical tutorials.

Currently I work as an Interactive Producer meaning that I make content for web and mobile within a traditional television environment and I’m interested in how these different mediums are shaping one another. I may occasionally talk about something affiliated with work*, but my scope is broader than that… I want to focus on the industry as a whole.

And then…?
My hope is that this blog will be good place to put down some thoughts & ideas and hopefully get some responses that challenge me in return. I’ll write so long as I feel I have something to contribute to the topic which could be a month or it could be five years like my other blog. Maybe I’ll switch careers and fly airplanes for a living. That would require a new blog. :)

Interactive Content Exchange

Interactive Content Exchange 2008 Yesterday evening, today and tomorrow, I’m attending the the Interactive Content Exchange or “ICE08″ conference.

If you want to follow along, I’ll be live blogging the event on Shift Edit which I’m beta testing for the developers (click here to follow). Shift Edit is like a rich-media Twitter. I love that you don’t need to create an account. I used my Facebook account to start Shifting right away.

I’ll post overall thoughts about the day at the end of today and tomorrow here.
